In 1999, the Indonesian Government granted PT WBN a concession for 45,045 hectares on Halmahera Island, which spans approximately 1,778 million hectares. Initially spanning 120,000 hectares and situated in Central and East Halmahera, the company voluntarily returned two-thirds of the land to the authorities as part of its CSR policy, specifically focusing on environmental aspects.
The parts containing ore economically recoverable following the exploration campaigns will be exploited in accordance with the life cycle of a mine (exploration, operation, rehabilitation, revegetation) over a 25-year period.
PT Weda Bay Nickel mines nickel ore and supplies it to multiple processing plants, where the nickel metal is extracted in the form of nickel ferroalloy, mattes, or nickel salts. These products cater to a variety of industrial and mobility needs, such as stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries for electric mobility.
These operations align with the Indonesian government’s objective of fostering a downstream industry to optimize the nickel value chain and enhance the value of EV batteries. PT Weda Bay Nickel adheres to Indonesian safety regulations and follows the highest international standards for mining practices, as well as Environmental, Social, and Governance practices in line with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) standard.
