Activities commenced towards the end of 2019 in accordance with the authorized plan and permits granted by the appropriate authorities. Eramet is managing the mining operations by leveraging its proficiency not only in nickel extraction but also in adopting a sustainable mining approach, with the aim of setting the standard within the industry.

Tsingshan is overseeing the joint-venture facility located in the industrial park, enhancing the RKEF process to maximize the utilization of nickel ore. The annual production from this operation amounts to approximately 30,000 tonnes of nickel.

36.3 Mwt

This marks PT Weda Bay Nickel’s latest production milestone in 2023, representing 17% of global production and positioning Weda Bay as the largest nickel mine globally.

Recognizing the importance of conserving natural resources, Eramet responsibly manages the mine by maximizing the extraction of economically viable minerals from the geological profile. Through thorough identification of saprolites and laterites during exploration and pre-exploitation efforts, these materials are extracted and processed into metal at specialized facilities.

The nickel ore produced by PT Weda Bay Nickel is aimed at supporting worldwide stainless steel production, essential for global economic development, as well as meeting the nickel demands for electric mobility and the production of electric batteries.

Consistent with its dedication and in compliance with the Indonesian government’s regulations, PT Weda Bay Nickel carries out mining reclamation activities by restoring and replanting vegetation in the excavated pits after ore extraction.

However, certain mined areas are exempt from this practice as they are utilized for establishing processing plants, industrial facilities, employee residences, and access roads.
